Frankincense and Myrrh
Frankincense and myrrh are best known around the world as two of the gifts of the Magi in the Bible. Even before the Bible was written, these herbs were found in magical guides all over the Middle East, northern Africa, and Europe. They are two of the most versatile, powerful ingredients you can have in your herb cabinet.
What are Frankincense and Myrrh?
Both frankincense and myrrh are resins of trees native to the Middle East and northern Africa. They are collected from injuries to the bark of their trees. First the bark is damaged, then, after the resin leaks out to seal off the damage, chunks of it are gathered. These resins are very valuable not only because of their fine fragrance and magical properties, but because they are rare -- their trees do not grow well outside of their native habitat.
Offerings to the Sun and the Underworld
Frankincense is a strongly solar herb. This makes it a suitable offering for sun gods, like Apollo, Bast, or Obatala. In Yule rituals to celebrate the return of the sun, frankincense is an excellent celebratory offering. To use resins as offerings, bless and dedicate them to the deities for which they are intended.
Burn them either directly in a ritual fire, or on charcoal in a fireproof brazier. Unlike burning resins for incense, do not waft the smoke of burned offerings. Myrrh is also a solar herb, but is associated with the Underworld. This makes it suitable for working with Underworld deities.
Powerful Spiritual Cleansers
The coming of the New Year is a time of spiritual preparation for many. We make resolutions to improve our lives, we clean our homes to get ready for family, and we want to start the year off right. Both frankincense and myrrh are excellent for spiritual cleansing.
Place either frankincense, myrrh, or a mixture of both resins onto a burning coal in a brazier, and wave it around your home with a feather or fan. Make sure the smoke touches all of the walls. As you do this, speak your intention out loud.
Say something like,
"This incense smoke cleanses all it touches. Nothing bad may linger here, only good is welcome."
It is also suitable for purifying a ritual space before spell work.
Attractants for Good Luck
Frankincense is a powerful herb for attraction. It is cleansing, relaxing, and improves your spiritual connection, which helps prepare you to receive the blessings coming to you. It also attracts everything from abundance to love.
For an easy good luck charm, place seven frankincense tears in a pouch made of yellow or gold fabric. Hold it in your hands, envisioning it filling with warm, sparkling golden light. When you are finished, carry it with you to draw good things to you.
Frankincense and myrrh are two ingredients no home should be without. They are powerful spiritual cleansers, welcome offerings to many gods, potent healers, and a wonderful way to attract the things you desire. No matter whether you choose to use them as raw resin, oil, or pre-made incense, these plants hold a lot of magical power
